Gorsuch Earns First Shutout as WMU Sweeps Ferris State

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Western Michigan senior goalie Trevor Gorsuch made 26 saves to earn his first career shutout as the 18th ranked WMU hockey team completed the sweep of Ferris State after a 5-0 win at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Colt Conrad, Cam Lee and Josh Passolt each had a goal and two assists, while Cole Gallant and Drew Worrad each tallied their first career goals. The Broncos outshot the Bulldogs 42-26 on the night and finished 2-for-8 on the power play. WMU also blocked 16 shots, including a game-high four by Luke Bafia.

The Broncos struck late in the first period at 17:42 to take a 1-0 lead. Gallant got the puck at the blue line and charged the net, fighting off a check to back-hand it into the net for his first collegiate goal. Conrad and Gorsuch each picked up assists, with Gorsuch earning his second career point.

Conrad gave the Broncos a 2-0 lead just 4:20 into the second period. Conrad went in for a shot but had his angle cut off. The assistant captain then skated around the net and tucked it in for the wraparound goal and his first tally of the season. Lee picked up his first assist of the season on the goal.

Lee pushed the lead to 3-0 at 7:12 with a power play tally. WMU was cycling with the man advantage and Lee ripped one from center point, hitting the bar and bouncing into the net for his second goal of the season. Passolt also picked up an assist on the goal.

Lee and Conrad combined to set up Passolt's fourth goal of the night, a power play tally at 4:15 in the third period. Lee dished it to Conrad in the left circle and he found Passolt wide open in the right circle for Passolt's second of the season.

With time winding down Worrad tallied his first collegiate goal with just 1:25 left on the clock. Jade McMullen centered it to the freshman forward and he banged it in from in front of the net. Passolt also tallied an assist for his first career three-point game.

Western Michigan heads to Ann Arbor to battle the University of Michigan on Friday, Oct. 19 before hosting the Wolverines on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available by calling 1-888-4-WMUTIX and online at wmubroncos.com/tickets.
