ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 19-ranked Western Michigan hockey team came up short in an 11-goal game during the first matchup between the Broncos and the University of Michigan at Yost Arena since 2012, falling 6-5 on Friday, Oct. 19.
Special teams ended up haunting the Brown & Gold, as the No. 10/11-ranked Wolverines went 3-for-7 on the power play, compared to a 1-for-6 mark for the Broncos.
After WMU went up 2-1 after the first 20 minutes, Michigan stormed back with three goals, two on the power play within a span of four minutes to take a 4-2 lead in the middle frame. The two teams then traded goals twice in the third period prior to a Bronco extra attacker goal, but it was too late in the one-goal loss.
Ethen Frank recorded his first career three-point performance with a goal and two assists, while Cam Lee scored twice, his team-leading third and fourth tallies of the year. Trevor Gorsuch took the loss in net, notching 24 saves.
In the first period, both teams converted power play goals. Precisely 15 minutes in, the Broncos took the first lead of the game. Hugh McGing pounced on a rebound after a Frank shot on goal for his second goal of the season.
With under two minutes remaining in the first frame, the Wolverines capitalized on their second power play opportunity. A shot from the point was blocked in front of Trevor Gorsuch and landed on the tape of Nick Pastujov, who buried the game-tying goal.
Seconds after the equalizer, Michigan was called for its third penalty of the period. On the ensuing faceoff, Paul Cotter won the draw back to Corey Schueneman, who sent a pass across to Ethen Frank. Frank's shot from the point beat the glove of Wolverine goaltender Hayden Levine for the power play tally and his first goal of the year, giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead heading into the intermission.
The Broncos were doomed by penalties in the middle frame. Michigan scored three goals, two on the power play, within a span of four minutes to take a 4-2 lead.
Austin Rueschhoff scored 13 seconds into the third period to cut the UM lead to 4-3. However, WMU took its sixth penalty of the game soon after. Despite Michigan nullifying the power play with a penalty of their own, the Wolverines scored during 4-on-4 to regain its two-goal lead just over three minutes into the third.
The two teams then traded goals seconds apart. Cam Lee got WMU back within one as he came out the box after the Broncos killed off their seventh penalty of the night, sprung forward with a pass from Ethen Frank and scoring on an open look at the net. Michigan then went ahead 6-4 seconds following the ensuing faceoff, finishing a back-door pass.
WMU pulled Gorsuch for the extra attacker with just under three minutes remaining and scored at 17:49 as Cam Lee snuck a nice shot past the shoulder of Levigne to put the Broncos behind by one goal once again, but the Wolverines were able to hold off Western Michigan's comeback attempt in the final minutes to seal the win.
The Broncos, now 2-2 overall, look to salvage a series split tomorrow night, Oct. 20, in Kalamazoo. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. at Lawson Arena. Â
