KALAMAZOO, Mich. – A young Western Michigan men's basketball team showed that while Midnight Madness might be fine for some, a spirited morning session can be just as exciting, as the Broncos hosted their annual Breakfast with the Broncos on Saturday.
The 2018 edition featured a free breakfast provided by Maggie's Catering along with two 16-minute scrimmages with both games being decided by less than four points.
In the first scrimmage the White Team defeated the Black Team, 28-24 as senior
Josh Davis provided the offensive spark for the white team with a game-high 16 points to go along with four rebounds. Freshman
Patrick Emilien proved to be a lethal scoring threat for the white squad, scoring seven points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field.
The black team was led by freshman
Luke Toliver and sophomore
Michael Flowers who each had eight points. Sophomore
Jason Whitens had an all-around game for the black team, scoring five points and registering four rebounds.
The second scrimmage came right down to the wire as the black team pulled out a 23-20 victory. It was the backcourt duo of Flowers and freshman
William Boyer-Richard that led the way with eight points while senior
Seth Dugan collected four points and a game-high six rebounds.
In the second scrimmage the black team was led by Whitens who had seven points on 2-of-5 shooting from the field to go along with three rebounds. Davis played well once again for the black squad registering five points to go along with three rebounds and three assists.
The 2018-19 campaign is right around the corner as the Broncos will hit the court for the first of two exhibition contests on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 2:00 p.m. against Northwood University. WMU squares off with Kalamazoo College on Saturday, Nov. 3 before kicking off the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 6 against Detroit Mercy.
