CLEVELAND, Ohio – Jannik Opiz, a sophomore on the Western Michigan men's tennis team, was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week the conference office announced Wednesday evening.

Opitz (4-0) is one of three Broncos who remained perfect this spring with a 2-0 record in singles over the weekend. Opitz was a defining part of the 5-2 WMU win over Iowa, which hasn't happened since the 2011-12 season, defeating Kareem Allaf of Iowa 6-4, 7-6 (2) after falling to him last season. The sophomore followed that up with a thrilling third set tiebreaker win 8-6 at the No. 3 spot against Drake's Barny Thorold to even the match at 3-3.
Western Michigan (4-1) hosts a doubleheader this coming Sunday, Jan. 28 at West Hills with Butler starting at 9 a.m. followed by Illinois State at 2:30 p.m. Admission to all home tennis matches is free.
