Track & Field Earns Three Wins at Kentucky Relays

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up the regular season with a successful trip to the University of Kentucky and the Kentucky Relays on Saturday.

WMU won three events on the day and also turned in several finishes in the top eight. The Broncos claimed the top spots in the 400-meter dash, 400-meter hurdles and the 4x100-meter relay.

Davonne Bolden took first in the 400 dash after running a time of 55.69 seconds. Redshirt freshman Sarah Anderson, who normally runs the 800 and the 1,500-meter runs, dropped down in distance to work on her speed and took second with a time of 56.38. Senior Diajah Ruffin also placed in the top five, taking fourth overall with a time of 56.88.

Senior Lindsey Hufnagel claimed the top spot in the 400 hurdles after running a time of 1:00.12. Freshman Erin Dowd finished in third after running 1:02.36 and was followed by Keyera Lige in fifth place.

Hufnagel was also a part of the winning 4x100 team. Joined by Sarita Dotson, Madison Meredith and Naiomi Dulaney, the four combined for a time of 46.45 seconds. Meredith went on to take second in the 200-meter dash after running 24.78 seconds. She was followed by Dulaney in fourth at 24.99 and by Ashley White in fifth at 25.38.

Senior Jordan Anderson fell just shy of her career-best time in the 800-meter run, taking second place with a time of 2:10.36. Freshman Holly Blowers also placed in the top eight, taking seventh with a time of 2:15.65.

In the 100-meter hurdles senior Jade McKnight was the top finisher for Western Michigan, taking fourth place with a time of 14.18 seconds. Freshman Gabrielle Collins took sixth with a time of 14.33.

The field events saw a trip of third-place finishes in the long jump, hammer throw and javelin. Freshman Erica Sheahan claimed the top spot in the long jump after reaching a distance of 18' 3.25". Sophomore Diana Holsey finished in fourth behind her at 17' 6.75".

Junior Brittany Casey was once again WMU's top finisher in the hammer throw. Casey threw a distance of 167' 11" to claim third. Senior Samantha Howard finished behind her in fifth place at 150' 10". Junior Savannah Dugan was the lone Bronco to compete in the shot put, reaching 42' 9.25" to take fifth. Hufnagel took third in the javelin in her first time competing in the event this season. She threw a distance of 115' 5" and was followed by fellow senior Kara Craig in fourth. Craig threw 114' 2".

Western Michigan now prepares to host the 2017 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships beginning on Thursday at the Kanley Track & Field Complex.
