BRANDON, Manitoba – Western Michigan hockey head coach Andy Murray will be conferred with an honorary Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) at Brandon University's, his alma mater, Spring Convocation on May 26.
Brandon University bestows individuals with an honorary degree based on significant service to the university community or society; excellence in professional life or public service; or advancement of knowledge through research or teaching. Last year an honorary degree was bestowed on Paul Martin, former Canadian Prime Minister from 2003 to 2006.
"Mr. Murray's success throughout his impressive career reflects his ability to foster effective teamwork, a lesson that is applicable to us all whether in athletics, academics or in the community," said Dr. Gervan Fearon, President and Vice-Chancellor of BU."His influence extends beyond his on-ice triumphs with his willingness to offer guidance and inspiration to others helping to instill leadership, collaboration and other important skills in new generations. These are values Brandon University stands for as well."
Murray, who is also a member of BU's Dick and Verda McDonald Sports Wall of Fame, played both hockey and football at Brandon before graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts. Recently he led the Broncos to a 22-win season, the program's sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament and a third-place finish in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference regular season.
The Souris, Manitoba, native has accumulated 103 wins in his five seasons at the helm for the Broncos and won a Central Collegiate Hockey Conference Tournament Championship back in 2012. Murray is also a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame and the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame for his contributions as a coach at the international level and in the National Hockey League.
Western Michigan has had a tremendous amount of success off the ice under Murray as well. WMU's student-athletes have received 55 total placements on the Academic All-NCHC team.
