The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a third-year award given to students who have excelled in athletics and academics. Following each season from the winter sports schedule, any student with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport. Also, first-year students, junior college and graduate school transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.
Shipman, a Fort Wayne, Ind., native, was named Third Team All-MAC after finishing top-20 in many statistical categories in the conference. She was second in steals (2.4), seventh in 3-point field goals made (77), seventh in minutes played (34.6), 11th in assists (3.4) and 19th in scoring (12.4). She was also named the team's WMU Teammate Award and the WMU Booster's Choice Award. Shipman's name is scattered all over the WMU record book, as she finished with the fourth most 3-pointers made in a career (177), tied for the second most 3-pointers made in a season (77) and is top-13 in both career assists and steals.
Shipman was one of 13 MAC Distinguished Scholar Athletes from WMU in the spring sports. Last season, Jessica Jessing and Alex Morton became the first players in WMU women's basketball history to win the award.
