MINNEAPOLIS – The Western Michigan track and field team wrapped up competition at the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota on Saturday.
The big highlight of the day came in the 60-meter dash as freshman Maddison Meredith ran the third-fastest time in program history at 7.59 seconds to take second place. WMU also took third and fourth place with Naiomi Dulaney taking third with a time of 7.63 seconds, tying her career best that also ranks fourth in school history. Senior Sarita Dotson finished right behind her with a time of 7.70 seconds.
"We didn't start running those times until late in the indoor season last year," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "Overall we had more positives than negatives today and that's a good thing."
The Broncos also took second, third and fourth in the 200-meter dash, flipping the order of finish from the 60-meter dash. This time it was Dotson as WMU's top finisher with a time of 25.05, followed by Dulaney at 25.28 and then Meredith at 25.65.
Freshman Holly Blowers ran a time of 5:13.87 in the mile run, a season-best, after recovering from an injury she suffered earlier in the season. She also finished sixth in the 800-meter run after turning in a time of 2:19.07.
Junior sprinter Ayiana Gaines took first place in the 400-meter dash after running a time of 56.60 seconds. Senior Lindsey Hufnagel nearly took second but was edged out by .05 seconds after running a time of 56.87.
WMU also saw improvement in the jumps. Redshirt freshman Gabrielle Collins had a personal-best in the long jump after reaching a distance of 18' 7.25".
Western Michigan heads to the famed Meyo Invitational at the University of Notre Dame beginning on Friday.
