Baseball Finishes Strong in 14-7 Win over Ohio

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan baseball team started slow against the Ohio Bobcats, but the Broncos got hot and stayed hot throughout the rest of the game, rolling to a 14-7 victory at Hyames Field Saturday afternoon.

With the win, WMU moved to .500 in Mid-American Conference (MAC) play at 10-10 and improved to 17-28 overall. The Broncos have also secured their fourth straight MAC series win. The Bobcats fall to 21-27 overall and 6-14 in the MAC.

WMU out-hit Ohio 14-10 and both teams had a tough day defensively, as the Bobcats were charged with four errors and the Broncos with three.

The Bobcats jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first to takes the game's momentum early. Ohio had four hits, drew a walk and was helped by an error. Also in the inning, 2015 MAC Player of the Year Mitch Longo hit a deep fly ball down the right field line that looked to be foul, but it was ruled fair and went down as a three-run home run.

WMU came back to cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Grant Miller drew a two-out walk, advanced to second on a wild pitch and came in to score on Hunter Prince's RBI double down the right field line to make the score 5-1.

The Broncos had a huge bottom of the third inning, scoring seven runs to pull ahead, 8-5. Twelve batters came to the plate and the first seven batters reached base. Junior Nick Vogelmeier was hit by a pitch twice in the inning by two different pitchers. Prince delivered a two-run single with the bases loaded and junior Alex Goodwin drew a bases loaded walk to score a run. After an error helped score another run for the Broncos, senior Mitchell Ho hit an RBI groundout to score freshman Jesse Forestell. Freshman Connor Smith, who has been on fire lately, hit a two-run single to right field.

The Broncos added another run in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the bottom of the fifth. Prince led off the fourth with his first career triple and Forestell drove him in with an RBI groundout. In the fifth, Miller drew another bases loaded walk to plate Ho and Prince scored a run with the help of an Ohio error to make it 11-7.

WMU sealed the win with three more runs in the bottom of the seventh inning off of four hits and another Bobcat error. Goodwin delivered a deep two-run triple over the right fielder's head to score Forestell and Prince. Senior Drew Farmer pushed the third run of the inning across with an RBI bunt single to score Goodwin, giving the Broncos a 14-7 lead.

Prince finished 3-for-6 with three runs, three RBI and was a home run away from the cycle. Goodwin went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI and two runs while Smith went 2-for-5 with two RBI and Forestell went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Vogelmeier and Ho each added a double.

Sophomore Jacob Piechota earned his team-leading eighth win of the season, pitching 4.0 scoreless innings to end the game while picking up three strikeouts. Sophomore Tanner Allison pitched effectively out of the bullpen, allowing just one run and one hit and 3.0 innings of work.
