NOBLESVILLE, Ind. -- The Western Michigan golf team made a late push and finished the opening round in second place after shooting a combined 293, sitting just four strokes behind leaders Toledo at Purgatory Golf Club on Friday.
Senior Chloe Lawrie led the way, shooting a -1, 71. She was one of two golfers on the day to record an eagle and was tied for tops in par five scoring at -2 and par three scoring at -2. Lawrie sits tied for third behind individual leaders Danielle Nicholson from Akron and Manisa Isavas from Toledo at -3.
Freshman Sara White shot a +1, 73 to finish in WMU's No. 2 spot on the day. She was also tied for the tournament lead in par five scoring after finishing -2 on the day. She also recorded a five birdies on the day, tied for second-most in the field in round one. Junior Anna Wilcoxson also finished -2 in par five scoring on the day and ended up with a +2, 74. Wilcoxson sits tied for 13th after her first round that consisted of 12 pars and three birdies.
Freshman Claire Hernandez and sophomore Julia Champion sit tied for 19th after shooting +3, 75's.
Action for Western Michigan in round two begins at 10:30 a.m. when Hernandez tees off. Lawrie tees off in the final group at 11:10 a.m.
