Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell at No. 2 North Dakota 8-1 in front of 11,634 fans at Ralph Engelstad Arena on Friday night.

North Dakota scored two goals in the first period, four in the second period and then two more in the third period to seal the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Regular Season Championship. Sheldon Dries scored the lone goal for the Broncos (8-22-3, 5-17-1-1).

UND took a 1-0 lead at 12:20 on a goal by freshman Brock Boeser. Boeser fired a shot from the left circle and beat starting goalie Trevor Gorsuch for his 23rd goal of the year. Minutes later Nick Schmaltz made it 2-0 after he snuck one past Gorsuch.

Boeser scored one of four Fighting Hawk goals in the second period, just 30 seconds in. Chris Wilkie tallied on the power play to push the lead to 4-0 at 2:43. Paul LaDue scored his fourth goal of the season at 7:04 to extend the lead to 5-0.

Dries redirected a shot by Corey Schuenmen past Cam Johnson to cut the lead to 5-1. Western Michigan was on a power play and nearing the end of it when Frederik Tiffels made a cross-ice pass to Schuenamen in the left circle. The freshman defenseman sent one on net, just moments after hitting the cross bar, and Dries redirected it off his stick and into the net for his 11th goal of the season.

Coltyn Sanderson netted his first of two goals on the night at 19:09 to send WMU into the locker room down 6-1.

Wilkie and Sanderson each tallied again late in the third period to push the final score to 8-1.

WMU wraps up the regular season on Saturday against North Dakota at 8 p.m. ET. The game can be seen live on Fox College Sports, NCHC.tv, and live on the Bronco Radio Network.
