CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Western Michigan men's tennis team improved to 10-4 this season with a nice 6-1 win over Cleveland State on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Broncos have now won six of their last seven games while the Vikings dropped to 8-5 this season.
WMU won the doubles point but it did not come easy. The duo of junior Matt Hamilton and sophomore Maik Steiner earned the first win of the day, defeating Buffington/Goth (Cle St) 6-3 at No. 2. The Vikings battled back to tie it at 1-1 winning at No. 1, but the duo of Jimmy Beckwith/Stephen Payne earned a hard-fought 7-5 win at No. 3 to clinch the doubles point for WMU. Steiner/Hamilton lead the team with a 19-4 record with the win today.
In singles play, the Broncos found themselves into some battles with the Vikings. At No. 1, Steiner lost the first set 6-3, but battled back to win it 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 10-8. Senior Ruben Greiner also lost the first set as well 7-5, but battled back to win it 5-7, 6-4, 10-7 at No. 2. Hamilton earned a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 3, Daniel Loebel won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4 and freshman Matej Svjetlicic moved to 23-8 this season with a win at No. 6.
The Broncos will take Spring Break off and return to action Tuesday, March 15 with a doubleheader at home against Aquinas and Grand Valley State.
