KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After a brief break the Western Michigan golf team is back in action beginning on Sunday at the 23rd annual John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate hosted by Georgia State at Eagle's Landing Country Club.
Practice rounds for the Broncos, the fifth-highest ranked team in the field, being on Saturday afternoon. WMU will battle hosts GSU, Appalachian State, Brown, Cal State Fulerton, Mid-American Conference rivals Central Michigan, Eastern Kentucky, Elon, Florida Golf Coast, Illinois State, Southern Alabama, UAB, UL Monroe, Western Carolina and Western Kentucky in the 15-team field. Eagle's Landing is a par 72 and measures in at 6,033 yards.
"This is a great tournament where they used to hold the Chik-fil-a LGPA event and the course is in great shape," said head coach Stacy Snider. "It's pretty straight forward and score-able."
Western Michigan is coming off one of its best performances of the season after taking second place at the Bulldog Florida Invitation hosted by Butler. The Broncos combined for a two round score of 631 and actually tied first-place Ball State but lost in the score-card playoff. WMU's top golfer in the field was freshman Claire Hernandez. Hernandez tied for second overall after shooting a combined 151 after a 76 in the first round anda 75 in the second round.
The John Kirk Panther Intercollegiate is the penultimate meet before the MAC Championship for the Broncos. WMU heads to the Gary Crossley Ford KC April 4-5 before the MAC Championship hosted by Eastern Michigan April 22-24.
