BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The No. 67 ranked Western Michigan men's tennis team opened the Mid-American Conference (MAC) season with a 6-1 win over Binghamton on a neutral court. The Broncos, who were the preseason favorite to win the MAC, improved to 13-4 and have won nine of their last 10 matches this season.
In doubles play, the duo of junior Matt Hamilton and sophomore Maik Steiner improved to 22-4 and extended their winning streak to five matches with a 6-4 win at No. 2. Sophomore Jefta Kecic and Jimmy Beckwith earned a 6-3 win at No. 3 to move to 7-2 this season.
In singles play, WMU won five of the six matches and four matches went to a third set. Senior Ruben Greiner moved his impressive winning streak to 11 matches with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 4. Freshman Matej Svjetlicic improved to 25-9 with a tough 6-4, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-0) win at No. 5. Kecic, Hamilton an Loebel also earned wins in singles.
The Broncos pick up play against Buffalo on Sunday, March 20 with match time scheduled for 11 a.m. on the Bulls home court.
