Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- The Western Michigan hockey team's season came to an end after a 4-2 loss at No. 5 St. Cloud State in the second game of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Quarterfinals at the Herb Brooks National Hockey center on Saturday night.
WMU picked up goals from Colt Conrad and Chris Dienes, while Lukas Hafner made 40 saves in his final game in the Brown & Gold.
Western Michigan took a 1-0 lead at 11:31 in the first period. After a big save by Hafner the Broncos started a breakout down the ice. With a 3-on-2 rush Conrad tried to feed Kyle Novak just to the right of the crease but the puck was deflected into the net by a SCSU defender for Conrad's eighth goal of the season. Griffen Molino tallied his team-best 13th assist on the season, while Novak also picked up his second helper on the weekend.
SCSU pounced on the Broncos in the second period scoring three goals in the span of 1:48. The first came at 10:23 when Robby Jackson punched in a loose puck from the slot for his 10th of the season. Just 12 seconds later Jimmy Schuldt put a WMU turnover into the back of the net for his ninth goal of the season. The Huskies pushed the lead to 3-1 at 12:11 in the second period when David Morely punched in a rebound on a shot by Jimmy Murray.
WMU had two power plays late in the second period but were kept off the board.
Western Michigan had several chances, including two power plays, in the third period but were unable to break through until Dienes tallied with 10 seconds left in the game. SCSU added an empty-net goal with 1.4 seconds left to set the final score at 4-2.
The Huskies outshot the Broncos 44-25 on the night.
