Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team wrapped up its home schedule with a 4-1 loss against No. 8 Denver on Saturday evening in front of 3,010 fans at Lawson Ice Arena.

The Broncos (8-22-3, 5-16-1-1) picked up a goal from Nolan LaPorte but the Pioneers had once again put WMU down 4-0 before LaPorte's late goal. DU's Tanner Jaillet made 32 saves on the night as did senior goalie Lukas Hafner for Western Michigan.

Trevor More gave Denver a 1-0 lead late in the first period during the final seconds of a power play. A Bronco had falled down near the DU net and created a 5-on-3 rush. Moore got a pass from Dylan Gambrell and beat Hafner for his eighth of the season. Gambrell notched his first of two assists on the night.

Defenseman Matt VanVoorhis gave the Pioneers a 2-0 lead just 1:07 into the second period. VanVoorhis picked up the loose puck after a wide shot by Danton Heinen and fired it past Hafner on a slap shot from the right point for his second goal of the season.

Gambrell, who also had the second assist on VanVoorhis' goal, scored one of his own at 15:01 in the second period to push the lead to 3-0. Heinen stole the puck away from a Bronco forward on a WMU power play and found Gambrell at center ice. The freshman skated into the right circle and fired it into the top-right corner of the net.

Colin Staub gave Denver a 4-0 lead after taking advantage of a busted play in the WMU end and getting it into the net for his third of the season.

LaPorte scored with 1:15 left in the third period to disrupt the shutout. The senior fired a shot from the right point that trickled past Jaillet for his seventh of the season.

Denver outshot WMU for the second-straight night, 36-33 and held the Broncos scoreless on two power plays.

Western Michigan closes out the regular season next weekend at North Dakota. Friday's game at 8 p.m. can be seen live on NCHC.tv, while Saturday's 9 p.m. start can be seen on CBS Sports Network.
