Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Griffen Molino netted his first collegiate hat trick and Trevor Gorsuch made 30 saves in his first career start as Western Michigan defeated Miami, 4-1, at Lawson Ice Arena on Ice Duchenne night on Saturday.

The Broncos (8-19-3, 5-14-1-1 NCHC) also picked up a goal by Jade McMullen on the night, while junior defenseman Chris Dienes finished with two assists and a +3 rating in his 100th career college hockey game. Miami outshot WMU 31-28 thanks to a late surge in the third period when the RedHawks pulled Jay Williams from the net for a total of 6:22.

McMullen's first collegiate goal gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Dienes fried a shot from the top of the left circle and the freshman from Edmonton, Alberta redirected it into the net from just in front of the crease. Michael Rebry also tallied an assist on the goal, his fourth of the season.

Just before the end of the period a penalty was called on Miami's Taylor Richart for tripping, leading to a faceoff with 1.6 seconds left on the clock. Nolan LaPorte won the draw back to Molino and the freshman forward fired it past Williams for his eighth of the season with 0.6 seconds left, giving WMU a 2-0 lead.

Molino struck again just 1:30 into the second period on Western Michigan's first short-handed goal of the season. After winning a draw on the penalty kill Aaron Hadley threw the puck behind the WMU net to Corey Schueneman. The freshman defenseman fired it down the ice to clear the puck but it ended up on net. Williams made the save but Molino beat the RedHawks down the ice and fired the rebound into the top-right corner of the net.

Miami's Kevin Morris tallied minutes later at 3:51 on the power play on a tap-in from just in front the crease after a pass from Louie Belpedio to cut the lead to 3-1.

Molino completed the hat trick, the first by a Bronco since LaPorte tallied one against Union on Nov. 29, 2014, at 11:08 in the second period. Dienes stripped the puck from a Miami forward deep in the WMU zone and then found Molino in some open ice down the left side. Molino skated in on Williams and beat him again over his glove hand for his 10th goal of the season.

Neither team tallied in the third period. The Broncos raised a total of $10,967 for the Parent Project for Muscular Dystrophy for its Ice Duchenne benefit game.

Western Michigan continues its home-stand with Denver coming into town next weekend. Saturday will be Senior Night as WMU honors its senior class of Nolan LaPorte, J.T. Osborn, and Lukas Hafner.
