Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. ? The Western Michigan baseball team had a tough test in No. 21 ranked Georgia Tech, and the Yellow Jackets proved it with a 13-0 win over Broncos in day two of the Atlanta Challenge. The Broncos fall to 0-2 this season while the Yellow Jackets improve to 2-0.
"Today was unfortunate having playing so well yesterday against Georgia State," Head coach Billy Gernon said. "Georgia Tech is a very good team but we have to play to our potential day in and day out regardless of our opponent."
Georgia Tech got started on offense early, tallying three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a couple of errors and a pair of RBI singles. The Broncos had a good chance to score in the top of third after Connor Smith led the inning off with a single. He eventually advanced to third with one down but a strikeout and a pop out stranded Smith at third base.
The Yellow Jackets then broke the game open in the fourth inning where they plated five to extend the lead to 8-0. In the inning, GT had three hits including a double and a home run and drew two walks. Georgia Tech also added one run in the sixth and four in the eighth.
The Broncos had runners on in seven out of the nine innings, but the Yellow Jackets pitching staff tightened up when they needed to. Seven different WMU players had a hit in the game including Drew Farmer, Grant Miller, Tanner Allison, Hunter Prince, Jesse Forestell, Andrew Stone and Smith.
Senior Derek Schneider suffered the loss going 3.2 innings allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits. Senior Pat Haynes had a good day out of the bullpen, throwing 1.2 shutout innings and striking out two batters.
Five different pitchers combined for the shutout for the Yellow Jackets as starter Jonathan King was credited with the win going 5.0 shutout innings allowing four hits and striking out two.
WMU returns to action against Kennesaw State on Sunday, Feb. 21 for the final day of the Atlanta Challenge. Game time is scheduled for Noon.?
