Box Score

OMAHA, Neb. -- Western Michigan fell 6-3 at No. 12 Omaha at Baxter Arena on Saturday night after a big second period by the Mavericks broke the game open.

UNO scored five straight goals between the end of the first period and the beginning of the second period to take a commanding 6-2 lead before Michael Rebry netted his second goal on the night to cut the lead to 6-3 but that's where the comeback effort ended.

The Broncos also picked up a goal by Nolan LaPorte and finished the night 2-for-9 on the power play.

WMU struck first on a goal just 21 seconds into the game by Rebry to take a 1-0 lead. Frederik Tiffels flung the puck towards the net and it deflected off of Rebry's leg and into the net for his sixth goal of the season.

Justin Parizek responded with a short-handed goal at 13:18 but still on the power play WMU capitalized to retake the lead, 2-1. Sheldon Dries won a battle on the wall and found LaPoprte in the right circle. The senior forward was on one knee and placed it right under the cross bar for his sixth goal of the season.

The Maverick then rattled off five straight goals, starting with a a late goal in the first period by Tyler Vesel at 19:19. Vesel deflected a shot by Cooper into the net for his fifth goal of the season.

UNO opened the second period with three goals in the first five minutes starting with a power play goal by Jake Guentzel at 0:43. Omaha pushed the lead to 4-2 on Vesel's second of the night, this time on a breakaway goal. At 4:55 Mason Morelli deflected in a shot to put the Broncos down 5-2.

WMU had chances at the end of the second period thanks to a 5-on-3 power play after UNO captain Brian Cooper was ejected after a checking from behind call.

Guentzel netted his second of the night at 5:15 to push the lead to 6-2 on a redirection of a pass by Ian Brady.

Rebry netted his second of the night with a power play goal at 11:59 to cut the lead to 6-3. Oliwer Kaski found Rebry on the right boards and the junior forward took it towards the slot. He out-waited a UNO defenseman that went down to block a shot and then fired it top-shelf on Weninger's stick side.

WMU had another power play late in the third period but didn't capitalize.

For the second straight night the Broncos outshot the Mavericks 34-33, including 14 on the power play.
