KENT, Ohio – The Western Michigan volleyball team dropped a tough road match at Kent State, 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 20-25, 28-26, 10-15) on Friday night.
Four different Broncos recorded double-digit kills, with junior Olivia Kofie leading the way with 19. Nicole Kinser kept her hot streak up, notching 15 kills with a .438 hitting percentage. Bailey Schnell finished with 13, while junior Sydney LeMay totaled 12. Sophomore setter Mary Murphy had a career-high 62 assists, while freshman libero Kathleen Reilly also marked a new career high after recording 28 digs.
WMJ (8-14, 3-6 MAC) was able to match KSU's runs during the first set, including a late 4-0 run to tie the score up at 21-21. The Golden Flashes closed down the set on a 4-0 run after a ball handling error, back-to-back kills by Drew Norberg and an ace by Katarina Kojic.
In the second set the Broncos jumped out to a 5-2 lead but Kent State whittled away at the lead until a 5-0 run put KSU ahead 17-15. Western Michigan used a 5-1 run to retake the lead, 21-19, and extended it out to 23-20. The Golden Flashes got back to within one, 24-23 but a kill by Quiana Ware finished it off for WMU.
The third seat saw Kent State and WMU trade points until a 3-0 run put KSU up 17-14. The Broncos attempted the comeback but never got within two points and fell 25-20.
In the fourth set, the two teams traded points until the Broncos went on a 5-0 run to open up a 12-9 lead. The teams then traded runs with KSU taking a 14-12 lead before WMU striking back and going ahead 16-14. The Golden Flashes responded with yet another run and moved into a 19-16 lead. Western Michigan closed out the gap with a 4-0 run and the teams traded points until a 23-23 tie. Kills by Schnell and LeMay gave WMU a 25-24 lead but Heather Younkin responded with a kill tie square it up at 25-25. The teams again traded points but back-to-back kills by Kofie won the set for the Broncos, 28-26.
In the fifth and final set the Kent State and Western Michigan traded points to a 6-6 tie. The Golden Flashes pulled away, taking a 10-7 lead and then extending it to 14-9 before taking the set and the match.
Western Michigan is back on the road on Saturday at Ohio for a 7 p.m. start. The game can be seen live on ESPN3.com.
