ATHENS, Ohio – The Western Michigan volleyball team fell at Ohio, 3-0 (9-25, 23-25, 23-25) in front of 2,353 at the Convocation Center on Saturday night.
WMU (8-15, 3-7 MAC) was held to a .034 hitting percentage by the Bobcats. Senior Alysia Baznik led the team with six kills and also finished with 12 digs on the night. Mary Murphy finished with 21 assists, while freshman Kathleen Reilly turned in a team-best 13 digs.
OU jumped out to a big 8-3 lead to start the first set and the Broncos never recovered, eventually falling 25-9. The final two sets were much closer affairs. In the second set, Western Michigan rallied from a 15-23-17 deficit to tie the set at 23-23 after a kill by Reilly. That was as close as WMU got, with the Bobcats scoring the final two sets.
The Broncos opened the third set with a 6-2 run, but it was also matched by a 6-2 run by OU to tie the set at 8-8. WMU briefly took a 10-8 lead before Ohio came back to make it 12-11. The teams traded points and Western Michigan extended its lead to 22-19 after a kill by Murphy. Ohio then closed out the set and the match with a 6-1 run.
