DENVER -- Western Michigan scored two goals in the final 10 minutes of the third period to force overtime and then Taylor Fleming scored the game-winning goal in 3-on-3 double-overtime for the Broncos to earn two points after defeating Denver in the extra overtime period after a 2-2 tie at Magness Arena on Saturday night.
Lukas Hafner had a career-high 49 saves as Colt Conrad and Frederik Tiffels tallied goals in regulation to force overtime.
Denver's Matt Marcinew put the Pioneers up 2-0 at 9:43 in the third period with their second power play goal of the night. The Broncos responded just 26 seconds later when Conrad, with a DU defender on his back, spun from the slot and fired it past Tanner Jaillet for his fifth goal of the season. Chris Dienes and Griffen Molino each tallied assists on the goal as WMU cut the lead to 2-1.
WMU hung in there, thanks to Hafner's 17 saves in the third period, and pulled its goalie with just under a minute left. Conrad found Aidan Muir in the slot and the sophomore forward fired the puck and it deflected off of Tiffels' chest and into the net to tie it up at 2-2.
The Broncos had five shots on goal in the first overtime period, including a breakaway by Molino but didn't get it past Jaillet. In the 3-on-3 overtime Molino got the puck to Fleming and the junior defenseman took it around the net, spun and fired it through Jaillet's skates and into the net to give the Broncos the extra point.
Denver outshot Western Michigan 51-33 but the Broncos did a solid job of keeping many of the shots at distance.
