Big Third Period Leads Broncos to Come Back Against Irish

Box Score

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Western Michigan scored three goals in the third period to battle back and tie No. 15/14 Notre Dame in front of 3,342 fans at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.

Giffen Molino scored 2:01 into the additional 3-on-3 overtime period but the game officially goes down as a 3-3 tie.

Down 3-0 in the third period, Michael Rebry kick-started the comeback with his third goal of the season at 5:28. Taylor Fleming gloved a high puck from Frederik Tiffels and passed it forward to Rebry. Rebry settled the puck in the right circle and beat UND goalie Cal Peterson to cut the lead to 3-1.

Midway through the period at 12:01 Sheldon Dries netted his first of two goals when he redirected a shot from Corey Scheuneman past Peterson for his sixth of the season.

With the Broncos down 3-2 head coach Andy Murray pulled Lukas Hafner from the final minute for the extra attacker. With just under 30 seconds Dries won a faceoff back to Oliwer Kaski. The freshman defenseman fired a shot from the blue line that was blocked in the slot by a Notre Dame defenseman. Dries was positioned in the slot and fired the rebound into the net to tie it up at 3-3.

Dries nearly had a hat trick with a golden chance at the end of the overtime but Peterson made the save with two seconds remaining.

Dylan Malmquist gave the Fighting Irish a 1-0 lead with his eighth goal of the season at 9:34 into the first period. Anders Bjork extended the lead at 8:35 into the second period on a breakaway goal and Jake Evans, after a lengthy review, gave Notre Dame a 3-0 lead with a goal at 5:12 in the third period.

Peterson made a game-high 36 saves for the Fighting Irish, while Hafner finished with 27. WMU finished 0-for-3 on the power play and UND finished 1-for-3

The Broncos are back in action next weekend at Denver. Friday's game is at 9:30 p.m. and will be broadcast by American Sports Network. The game can be seen in west Michigan on CW-7. Saturday's game is set for a 9 p.m. puck drop and can be seen live on NCHC.tv. Both games can be heard live on the Bronco Radio Network.
