KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan women's soccer team battle Illinois State University to a 1-1 tie to wrap up non-conference play on Friday afternoon at the WMU Soccer Complex.
The Broncos (3-2-2) took a 1-0 lead into the final minutes but a red card was given to a WMU defender for bringing her marker down in the box and Hannah Rodgers completed the penalty kick to tie the game. Neither team could take advantage in the two overtime periods. Stephanie Heber made three saves on the day for Western Michigan.
"I thought we played well for the first 70 minutes," said head coach Nate Norman. "Illinois State was able to bring an energy that we didn't after that. I was very proud of the girls for battling with just 10 players in overtime to keep the tie."
After a scoreless first half the Broncos struck in the 54th minute. Emma Kahn played the ball across the top of the box to Candice Uhl. Uhl ran down the right edge and crossed it into the middle, where Vollmers just tapped it in for her first goal of the season.
Up 1-0 the Broncos nearly put the game away in the 87th minute but Maria Jaramillo's curling-shot hit the corner of the post and bounced out into the box. ISU capitalized and on the miss and ran down the field, where the Bronco defender fouled a Redbird forward in the box to draw the penalty kick. Rodgers slotted the shot directly into the center of the net for her second tally of the season and the game-tying goal.
ISU outshot the Broncos 12-8 overall and had a 4-2 advantage for shots on goal.
