KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan soccer team closed out its exhibition season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Oakland University on Friday afternoon.

With a packed bleachers for Fill The Farm day, the Broncos picked up goals from Liz Abro and Candice Uhl. Stephanie Heber started in net but didn't face a shot on goal, while Emily O'Grady came in at halftime and made three saves. WMU outshot OU 8-7 overall and had a 5-4 shots-on-goal advantage.

Abro got the Broncos off to a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Makenzie Barber played a ball to Abro on the left side of the box and the junior midfielder chipped it over the Grizzly goalkeeper and into the right corner of the net.

The Broncos pushed the lead to 2-0 in the 36th minute on Uhl's goal. Some nifty passing between Olivia Vollmers and Heather Piccariello led to an easy tap-in for Uhl's game-winning goal.

Oakland picked up play in the second half and struck in the 53rd minute. After a foul just outside the left corner of the box, OU's Joan Seija played a free kick into the box. The ball made its way through traffic to Aly Rawson, who punched it into the net.

WMU held on to the lead for the remainder of the game to finish its exhibition season 2-0. The Broncos open the regular season hosting Notre Dame on Sept. 4 at 4 p.m.
