MUNCIE, Ind. -- Western Michigan freshman Jade Madison finished in second place in the javelin to highlight the opening day of the 2015 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships at Ball State on Thursday.
Madison threw a distance of 45.54m (149-05) on her third of six throws to claim eight points for the Broncos. The finish, in her first career Outdoor MAC Championship guarantees at least her a Second-Team All-MAC selection.
"She had to overcome a little bit of nervousness after fouling on the first throw," said head coach Kelly Lycan. "She got her composure back and calmed herself down and ended up with a great throw on her third try. She got a little aggressive in the finals but she's learning. Coach Igor (Misljenovic) has done a fantastic job with her after she had never thrown a javelin until she got here. Those eight points got us off to a really great start.
Also in action was Ann Marie Arseneau in the 10,000-meter run. Arseneau finished with a personal-best time of 36:28.88 but finished just shy of scoring and took ninth overall.
Stephanie Negrete and Lindsay Crum each competed in the hammer throw with Negrte finishing in 12th with a distance of 51.88m (170-02). Negrete will also compete in the shot put and the discus.
The Broncos have a full day of action on Friday with qualifications in several running events and the finals of the steeplechase.
