DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The 74th-ranked Western Michigan men's tennis team pushed its win streak to 10 straight matches on Saturday, sweeping a doubleheader in Daytona Beach with 5-2 wins over Bethune Cookman and Butler. With the wins, the Broncos improve to 12-3 overall on the season. They will wrap their trip in Florida on Tuesday when they face off with Central Florida in Orlando.
The nationally-ranked Broncos started off their day with a convincing win over the Wildcats, taking the doubles point and winning four of six singles matches to take the road victory. Maik Steiner and Andrew Cahn got things going with a No. 1 doubles win over Walid Gtari and Kevin Deligny, downing them easily to put the Wildcats on their heels. Matt Hamilton and Marc Shideler recorded their first doubles win of the day with a tiebreaker victory over Diego Garavito and Gilbert Rotich in the No. 3 doubles match, winning 7-6 (5) to secure the point for WMU.
Hamilton put the Broncos ahead 2-0 in the match with a straight-sets win over Rotich at No. 3 singles, and Steiner made it a 3-0 advantage with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Alexander Chepik at the No. 2 spot. The clincher came courtesy of Jimmy Beckwith, who continued his midseason surge with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Alvaro Berrera in the No. 4 singles match. Andrew Cahn wrapped up the scoring for the Broncos in the No. 6 singles match, surviving a second-set tiebreaker with Garavito and ultimately coming back from a set down for a 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-4 win.
The Broncos dropped the doubles point to start the late match with the Bulldogs but immediately won four straight singles matches to clinch the team win over Butler. Beckwith picked up his second straight win to start it off, cruising to a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Alex Woldmoe in the No. 4 singles match. Cahn blasted Tommy Marx in the No. 6 singles match to make it a 2-1 advantage, and Kecic put the Broncos in position to clinch with a 6-2, 6-2 win in No. 1 singles over Austin Woldmoe. Steiner clinched the team victory by surviving a first set tiebreaker with Brandon Woods in the No. 2 singles match, winning 7-6 (6), 6-2 to put the Broncos ahead 4-1. Mora finished off the scoring with a three-setter in the No. 5 singles match, beating Billy Weldon 1-6, 6-4, 6-0.
