Broncos Fall to Bulldogs, 6-3

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan hockey team dropped a wild one that featured five goals in the span of two minutes to Minnesota-Duluth, 6-3, at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.

After a scoreless first period the goals started rolling in at 4:36 when Willie Corrin struck first for the Bulldogs, giving them a 1-0 lead on a shot from the left point.

Sheldon Dries tied the game up at 1-1 at 7:35 on a power play goal. Colton Hargrove found Dries at the right side of the net. The sophomore forward fired a shot and then punched in the rebound for his team-best 13th of the season.

Justin Crandall gave UMD a 2-1 lead at 16:18 on a power play goal from the top of the left circle. Willie Raskob faked a shot from the top of the right circle and found Crandall alone and he fired it into an open net.

At 16:59 Sam Mellor netted his first goal of the season after he punched in a rebound on a shot by Matt Stewart. Stewart threw a shot on net from the middle of the left circle and UMD goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo made the initial save but Mellor came streaking off the bench and shot the puck past Kaskisuo to tie the game up at 2-2.

Just 47 seconds later Karson Kulhman tapped in a rebound on a shot by Austin Farley to put Minnesota-Duluth back up 3-2. The Bulldogs had a 2-on-1 rush and Farley fired a shot on net. Frank Slubowski got a piece of it with his glove but it bounced to his skates and Kuhlman put it in the net.

It took WMU just 13 seconds to tie the game at 3-3 when Frederik Tiffels threw the puck into the slot and it was accidently knocked in by a UMD defenseman for his ninth goal of the season.

Andy Welinski's rocket from the top of the right circle broke the tie at 18:18 for the game-winning goal.

Dominic Toninato added two goals, including an empty-net goal with .01 seconds left on the clock, to push the final score to 6-3.

WMU hosts the Bulldogs for the final home game of the 2014-15 season on Saturday at 7 p.m. Prior to the start WMU will honor its senior class of Will Kessel, Justin Kovacs, Frank Slubowski and Matt Stewart.
