KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Western Michigan men's tennis team picked up its third straight win on Sunday as the Broncos opened Mid-American Conference play with a 4-3 victory over the Binghamton Bearcats at West Hills Athletic Club.
The match was neck-and-neck throughout and ultimately came down to a pair of three-set matches remaining to decide it. Maik Steiner claimed the clinching victory over Robin Lesage in the No. 2 singles match, overcoming a second-set loss to win 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 to ice away the win.
Steiner was a key part of the doubles success for the Broncos as well, teaming with Ruben Greiner to beat Sid Hazarinka and Ismael Dinia 6-1 in the No. 1 doubles match to give WMU a one-match advantage in the doubles session. After the Bearcats tied doubles play with a win at No. 2, the duo of Jefta Kecic and Jimmy Beckwith prevailed 6-4 over Thomas Caputo and Frenk Kote to give the Broncos the extra point they would need for the win.
The Bearcats tied the team match with a win at No. 3 singles, but Beckwith struck again with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Kote to put the Broncos back on top 2-1. Kecic made it a 3-2 advantage with a straight-sets victory over Hazarinka at No. 1, and Steinver ended up closing out the match with the three-set win over Lesage.
