Broncos Win Shootout After 2-2 Tie at Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The Western Michigan hockey team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit to tie Colorado College, 2-2, and win the shootout 1-0 in three rounds to earn the extra point at World Arena on Friday Night.

The Broncos got goals from Sheldon Dries and Nolan LaPorte, while Lukas Hafner made 23 saves and then three stops in the shootout. LaPorte had the lone shootout goal to win it for WMU.

WMU outshot CC 52-25 on the night, the first time the team has reached 50 shots since putting up 54 on Canisius on Oct. 9, 2010 in an overtime win over the Griffins.

After spotting Colorado College two goals in the first 3:26 of the first period by Luc Gerdes and Peter Maric, Dries cut the lead to 2-1 at 7:09 in the second period. Chris Dienes threw the puck near the net and it was deflected to Tiger goalie Tyler Marble. Marble made the save but didn't hold the rebound and Dries swooped in and put a back-hander into an open net for his 12th of the season.

The Broncos tied it up at 7:08 in the third period on LaPorte's goal. Josh Pitt made a strong move to hold onto the puck and found Justin Kovacs in the slot. Kovacs put a no-look pass to LaPorte and the junior captain roofed it into an open net for his 10th of the season.

WMU was held scoreless on four power plays and held Colorado College to just one power play goal on three chances, including a five-minute major power play.

The two teams battle for the final time during the regular season on Saturday at 9 p.m.
