WMU Drops Road Game at No. 17 Minnesota-Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. – The Western Michigan hockey team dropped a road contest at No. 17 Minnesota-Duluth 6-2 on Saturday night at Amsoil Arena in front of a crowd of 6,083. The Broncos record falls to 4-10-1 and 2-6-0-0 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) while the Bulldogs improve to 7-5-3 and 4-3-1-1 in the NCHC.

Oliwer Kaski and John Carpino both scored for the Broncos while junior goaltender Colin Olson finished with 28 saves. WMU was called for eight penalties for 16:00 minutes, their second highest total this season. UMD outshot WMU 34-27 while Bulldog goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo made 25 saves.

Adam Johnson put UMD up 1-0 at 14:28 in the first period and Austyn Young extended the lead to 2-0 at 7:01 in the second period as he collided with Olson in goal but managed to get the puck in before knocking the net loose.

Kaski cut into the lead at 13:36 in the second period with his second goal of the season coming just after a faceoff, making it 2-1 UMD. Aaron Hadley was credited with the assist, his fourth of the season.

Tony Cameranesi scored a power-play goal for the Bulldogs at 17:36 in the second period to put UMD up 3-1. In the third period, Austin Farley twice with the first coming at :30 on a power-play and the second coming at 13:43 also on a power-play. Parker Mackay scored the Bulldogs final goal of the game at 17:16.

At 19:10 in the third period, the freshman Carpino scored his first goal of the season and the first of his career with assists going to Aidan Muir and Chris Dienes. This was Muir's first assist of the season and Dienes third.

The Broncos return home for a two-game homestand with NCHC opponent Colorado College with the first game slated for Friday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. and the second game at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12.
