Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – The Western Michigan hockey team fell 7-0 on the road against No. 17/RV Minnesota-Duluth Friday night at Amsoil Arena before a crowd of 5,874. The Broncos fall to 4-9-1 and 2-5-0-0 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) while the Bulldogs improved to 6-5-3 and 3-3-1-1 in the NCHC.
Six different players scored for the Bulldogs, who won the shot battle 51-27. WMU was outshot 24-6 in the first period but battled back and outshot UMD 12-10 in the second period. Senior Lukas Hafner made 22 saves in the first period and finished with a career-high 44 saves.
Sixteen different Broncos recorded as shot as Nolan LaPorte led with four. Frederik Tiffels, Willem Nong-Lambert and Jade McMullen each had three.
Austyn Young gave UMD an early 1-0 lead at 9:01 in the first period with assists going to Kyle Osterberg and Andy Wellinski. The Bulldogs then went up 2-0 at the 12:34 mark in the first period as Dominic Toninato scored on a power play with an assist from Neal Pionk. Less than a minute into the second period, Alex Iafallo scored an unassisted goal from the right side through the defense to put the Bulldogs up 3-0.
In the third period, Karsen Kuhlman scored two Bulldog goals to put the game away. On his first one, he wrapped around the goalie and shot in the back of the net to put the Bulldogs up 4-0 at 7:58. Later in the period at 9:51, he scored on a power play to put UMD up 5-0. Adam Johnson and Parker Mackay also scored in the period.
The Broncos face UMD again at Amsoil Arena on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 8 p.m.
