Box Score KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey team picked up a 7-3 win over Colorado College at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday nigh, snapping an eight-game losing streak.
The Broncos' season-best offensive output was led primarily by its five freshmen Corey Schueneman, Jade McMullen, Griffen Molino, Oliwer Kaski, and Colt Conrad. All five registered points on the night with Kaski and Molino recording career-high three-point nights. WMU (5-10-1, 3-6-0-0 NCHC) also picked up goals from Frederik Tiffels and Michael Rebry, with Kyle Novak tallying two assists. Lukas Hafner made 25 saves to earn his third win of the season.
Colorado College took an early 1-0 lead on the first of two Andrew Farny goals on the night. On the power play Farny fired a shot that deflected off of two Broncos and past Hafner at 4:24 in the first period. Mason Berg and Hunter Fejes tallied assists on the goal.
Western Michigan responded at 15:31 on Tiffels' fourth goal of the season. Kaski fired a rocket from the top of the right circle and Tiffels came slashing into the slot to knock it in and tie the game up 1-1.
WMU opened the game up midway through the second period on Kaski's first of the night at 9:20. Molino found Kaski at the center point and the Finnish defenseman tucked it under the crossbar for his third goal of the season. Novak also tallied an assist on the power play goal.
Fejes tied the game up at 14:16 when he beat Hafner from the slot after Luc Gerdes won a draw back to him in the Bronco zone.
Kaski added his second of the night at 16:35 in the second period just two seconds after a WMU power play had ended. This time it was Novak finding Kaski from the deep slot and the freshman went post-to-post for his fourth goal of the season and first career multi-goal game. Molino picked up his second assist on the night on the goal.
The eventual game-winner came with just 12 seconds left in the period. Chris Dienes created a turnover at the CC blue line and Rebry picked up the loose puck for a breakaway and buried it for his first goal of the season, giving the Broncos a 4-2 lead.
Western Michigan added three more goals in the third period. Conrad picked up his first on the night at 3:01 after John Carpino won a battle behind the Tiger net and passed it to McMullen. McMullen was to the left of the slot and found a streaking Conrad for the goal, his second of the season. The assist was the first point in McMullen collegiate career and it was also Carpino's first career assist.
Molino netted his third goal of the season at 7:03 after he unleashed a rocket from the top of the left circle to put the Broncos up 6-2. Rebry and Nolan LaPorte each tallied assists on the goal.
Farny netted his second of the night, another power play goal, at 14:01 to cut the lead to 6-3. Mason Bergh found him at the center point once again, but this time Farny beat Hafner clean for his second career goal.
Western Michigan responded just 28 seconds later when Taylor Fleming fired a slap shot from the right point and it deflected off of Conrad and in for his career-high second goal of the night. Dienes also picked up his second assist on the night as the Broncos put the game away.
WMU outshot Colorado College 35-28 on the night and the team finished 1-for-4 on the power play. The Tigers converted two of their four power play chances.
