KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan women's basketball team scored 46 second half points on its way to a 72-42 rout of visiting Lake Erie College in an exhibition outing Sunday afternoon.
The Broncos officially open the 2015-16 season this weekend, hosting UW-Parkside Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Michigan State two days later for the team's first road test, taking on the Spartans in East Lansing, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m.
Ten players saw action in the exhibition outing for Western Michigan. The Broncos went with a starting lineup of senior Alex Morton, junior Meredith Shipman and sophomore Najee Smith at the guard positions and senior Jessica Jessing and sophomore Teagan Reeves in the post.
Western Michigan enters this season with a much different look after graduating four seniors that contributed significant minutes last year. Â
Smith saw limited playing time last year, but made the most in her starting role against Lake Erie. She was aggressive towards the basket and finished with 10 points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Another bright spot for the Broncos was the play of freshman forward Breanna Mobley who came off the bench to tally 11 points and six rebounds, four of which were on the offensive end.
Shipman led Western Michigan with a game-high 14 points, shooting 5-for-7 from the floor, including 4-for-5 from behind the arc. She also grabbed seven rebounds.
Jessing was the fourth Bronco to score in double figures, recording 11 points and tying Shipman with a team-high seven rebounds.
The Broncos had 17 assists in the game, however turned the ball over 18 times. Western Michigan shot 36.5 percent from the floor and went 7-for-16 (43.4 %) from downtown.
WMU led 26-20 at halftime before pulling away in the second half, outscoring Lake Erie 24-11 in the third quarter and 22-11 in the fourth quarter. New to women's college basketball this year is a four 10-minute quarter format, replacing the previous two, 20-minute halves.
