Bronco Comeback Bid Falls Short at Miami

OXFORD, Ohio -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell at for the second-straight night to Miami. 2-1, on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena.

Sheldon Dries scored WMU's lone goal and Lukas Hafner made 30 saves. The Broncos (4-4-1, 2-2-0-0 NCHC) once again couldn't get more than one goal past RedHawk goalie Ryan McKay, who made 19 saves on the night.

Miami took a 1-0 lead at 12:07 in the second period. Sean Kuraly found Alex Gacek in the WMU zone and Grant Hutton was screening Hafner. Gacek fired the puck into the net for his second goal of the season.

Western Michigan responded with Dries' fifth goal of the season at 15:17. Dries blocked a pass by Justin Greenberg and skated in on McKay, beating him low glove-side to tie the game up at 1-1.

Midway through the third period J.T. Olson was called for tripping at 11:20. Anthony Louis fired the puck past Hafner right off the draw for his first goal of the season and the game-winner.

WMU had some chances late but were unable to get the puck past McKay more than once for the second time this weekend. Dries led all Broncos with four shots on goal, while Paul Stoykewych had three.

Western Michigan was held scoreless on both of its power plays on the night and is now scoreless in its last 11.

The Broncos host No. 10 St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m.
