Broncos Fall to Engineers, 4-1

Box Score

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The Western Michigan hockey team fell to Rensselaer, 4-1, to open the 2015 Shillelagh Tournament at Notre Dame's Compton Family Ice Arena on Friday night.

Four different players scored for RPI, while Corey Schueneman earned his first collegiate goal for the Broncos in the loss.

Alex Rodriguez gave the Engineers a 1-0 lead at 9:03 in the first period. Sophomore defenseman Mike Prapavessis pounced on a loose puck and passed it up along the boards to Rodriguez. The freshman forward got behind the Bronco defense and buried a back-hander on the breakaway for his second goal of the season.

Rensselaer scored two quick goals in the second period to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Riley Bourbonnais saw his shot deflected in the net on a power play to give RPI a 2-0 lead at 3:18. At 3:55 Lou Nanne punched in a rebound on a shot by Prapavessis to push the lead to 3-0.

The Broncos nearly responded a minute later as Chris Dienes sprung Frederick Tiffels on a breakaway but the speedy forward was harrassed just enough by the RPI defense to force a bad shot.

WMU cut the lead to 3-1 at 13:31 on a power play goal by Schueneman. The freshman defenseman dumped the puck from the blue line to get a line change but a RPI player passed the puck into the slot but it deflected off another Engineer and into the net. By rule the goal goes to the last Bronco to touch the puck, with Schueneman earning his first collegiate goal.

Western Michigan pressured the Engineers hard in the third period, outshooting them 10-6, but were unable to get anything past Cam Hackett. Hackett made 25 saves on the night to keep RPI unbeaten in their last nine games.

The Broncos outshot RPI 26-24 on the night and finished 1-for-5 on the power play. Rensselaer finished 1-for-3 on the night.

WMU plays hosts Notre Dame on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
