Bronco Suffer First Home Loss Against St. Cloud State

Box Score

KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan hockey team had its home winning streak snapped after a 5-2 loss to No. 9 St. Cloud State at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.

SCSU's Jimmy Murray netted two goals on the night, while Ethan Prow had three assists. Husky goalie Charlie Lindgren made 26 saves on the night. The Broncos picked up goals from Nolan LaPorte and Frederik Tiffels, both coming on the power play. COllin Olson made 23 saves in the loss.

After a scoreless, but back-and-forth, first period the Huskies took a 1-0 lead at 6:07 in the second period. A bad change resulted in a 3-on-1 rush for SCSU and Murray netted his first goal of the night from Patrick Russell.

LaPorte tied the game up at 1-1 on a redirection off a shot by Matheson Iacopelli at 12:45. Tiffels also tallied an assist on the goal. The power-play tally also ended WMU's drought that head reached 0-for-11, dating back to Oct. 24 at Clarkson.

St. Cloud State took advantage of a major power play to open the third period to take a 2-1 lead. Joey Benik fired one past Olson at 3:46 on a cross-ice pass from Kalle Kossila.

Minutes later Murray added his second of the night after a break down lead to an odd-man rush for the eventual game-winner.

The Broncos pulled Olson down 3-1 with just under 5:00 left in the period to try to jump-start the comeback but Judd Peterson added an empty-net goal at 16:48.

Tiffels added a late power-play goal at 18:51 to cut the lead to 4-2 but Russell added a second empty-net goal with just 26 seconds remaining.

SCSU outshot the Broncos 29-28 on the night. WMU finished 2-for-2 on the power play and the Huskies finished 1-for-4.

The two teams square off again on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The game can be seen live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network, including locally on 590 AM WKZO.
