Box Score KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan hockey team completed its first sweep of a No. 1 ranked team since the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls were established in 1997 after defeating Omaha, 6-1, at Lawson Ice Arena on Saturday night.
J.T. Osborn netted two goals and an assist for his first career three-point night and each of his linemates also had three-point nights with Aaron Hadley tallying three assists and Colt Conrad netting a goal with two assists. The Broncos (4-2-1, 2-0-0-0 NCHC) also got goals from Chris Dienes, Mike McKee and Sheldon Dries. Senior goalie Lukas Hafner made 37 saves to earn his second win of the season.
Like in last night's win over the Mavericks, Western Michigan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after Osborn netted his first of the season at 7:36 in the first period. Conrad skated in on net and fired a shot that was saved by Omaha starting goalie Evan Weninger. The puck bounced into the slot and Osborn punched it in. Hadley also picked up an assist on the goal, his first of the season.
Just 2:30 later at 10:06 Conrad put one in for his first collegiate goal. Hadley won the faceoff and Conrad took it down low on the goal-line. He had room to maneuver and put it around Weninger to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead.
Dienes pushed the lead to 3-0 at 18:00 in the first period. A shot by Osborn deflected off of Hadley's skate in front of the net and the junior defenseman reached and poked it into the net for his second goal of the season. Hadley earned his third assist on the night, a new career high.
Things slowed down a bit in the second period but the Broncos still pushed their lead to 4-0 at 11:30. McKee ripped one past Kirk Thompson, who replaced Weningner at the start of the period, for his first goal of the season. Neal Goff and Scott Moldenhauer each picked up their first assists of the season on the goal.
Osbron netted his second of the night on a breakaway just 1:52 into the third period to put WMU up 5-0. Oliwer Kaski blocked a shot and kicked it out to Conrad and the freshman fed Osborn through traffic. Osborn skated in on Thompson and went high glove-side.
Omaha's lone goal came minutes later at 4:02 on a Bronco power play. Justin Parizek hit Jake Guentzel in stride and the talented junior got past a Bronco defender and put it in the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Dries added his fourth goal of the season at 17:19 when he punched in a rebound on a shot by Nolan LaPorte to finalize the score at 6-1.
Neither team converted on the power play with the Broncos going 0-for-3 and the Mavericks 0-for-4, making WMU's penalty kill a perfect 7-for-7 on the weekend.
Western Michigan heads on the road for the first time in NCHC play next weekend at Miami. Friday's game is at 7:30 and Saturday's tilt is scheduled for 8 p.m. Both games can be seen live on NCHC.tv and heard live on the Bronco Radio Network.
