Broncos Fall at Clarkson, 4-2

Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. -- The Western Michigan hockey team suffered its first lost of the season after a hard-fought 4-2 battle at Clarkson on Friday night.

The Broncos (2-1-1) picked up goals from Nolan LaPorte and Aidan Muir, while Collin Olson made a game-high 26 saves. The Broncos penalty kill finished 1-for-4 tonight but a late power play goal by Clarkson in the third period proved to be the deciding factor.

Tied 2-2 Mike McKee took a holding penalty at 15:28 in the third period. Sam Vigneault poked in a loose puck at 17:21 for the game-winning power play goal. Pat Megannety added an empty-net goal at 19:26.

It was Western Michigan that struck first early in the first period. Sheldon Dries had a shot go wide and to the boards, he tapped it to the slot and LaPorte punched it in for his first goal of the season. The assist was Dries' second of the year and Matheson Iacopelli tallied his first collegiate assist as the Broncos went up 1-0.

Clarkson opened the second period with two goals in nine seconds. The first came just after a power play ended at 1:37 by Todd Christian. Christian was open in the slot and fired it past traffic into the top-right corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1. Seconds later at 1:46 a defensive breakdown led to a 2-on-1 and Jordan Boucher punched it into the net for his third goal of the season to take a 2-1 lead.

After Trey Josephs was ejected at 8:45 in the second period for contact to the head the Broncos went on a five-minute major power play. At 10:52 Muir fired a puck that appeared to go off the post on a rebound by an initial shot by Michael Rebry. Play continued but at a stoppage the referees reviewed the play and ruled it a goal. It was Muir's first of the season as the Broncos tied it up at 2-2.

WMU was held to just two shots on goal in the third period and was outshot 30-16 overall on the night.

The two teams go at it again on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
