KALAMAZOO -- The Western Michigan hockey team netted three power-play goals to earn its season-opener after downing rivals Ferris State, 3-2, at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.

Sheldon Dries, Chris Dienes and Griffen Molino all lit the lamp on the power play as the Broncos went 3-for-8 with the man advantage. Collin Olson made a career-high 31 saves in his Brown & Gold debut to earn the win, with 14 coming on the penalty kill. Olson was named the game's No. 1 Star, while Kyle Novak was named the No. 2 star after setting up WMU's first and third goals on the night. Dienes also had his first two-point night of the season, also assisting on the game-winner.

Ferris State took an early 1-0 lead at 10:16 in the first period. Mitch Maloney punched in a rebound on a shot by Chad McDonald on the power play.

The Bulldogs held the lead until Dries scored on a 5-on-3 at 5:47 in the second period. Dries parked himself in the slot and Novak was down low to the left of the goal. Freshman defenseman Corey Schueneman fed Novak and he sent it to Dries, who one-timed it into the net for his first goal of the season. The assist was Schnueneman's first collegiate point.

FSU retook the lead at 13:29 in the second on a goal by Kenny Babinski. Ryan Lowney fired a shot wide of the net and it bounced off the boards and right to Babinski, who put it into the left-side of the net, pushing the score to 2-1.

Molino had a goal taken off the board after it was ruled the puck was kicked in at 3:58 left in the second. However, WMU tied it up with 1:49 left in the period on Dienes' power play goal. Freshman forward Colt Conrad found Dienes in the right circle and the junior defenseman's shot went off the right post and in to square theg ame at 2-2. Taylor Fleming also tallied an assist, with Conrad picking up his first career point.

Molino tallied the game-winner at 6:40 in the third period. Novak set up the freshman forward on an odd-man rush and he punched in WMU's third power play goal of the night to take a 3-2 lead.

The Broncos held on, including killing off three Bulldog power plays in the third period.

WMU heads to Big Rapids to battle Ferris State on the road on Saturday at 7 p.m.
