DULUTH, Minn. -- For the second-straight Saturday Colton Hargrove netted a game-winning unassisted goal as the Broncos defeated No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth at AMSOIL Arena on Saturday night.
Deadlocked at 2-2 in the third period Hargove, who beat Notre Dame in the same fashion, stole the puck from UMD's Andy Welinski and snapped it past Kasimir Kaskisuo for his eighth goal of the season. The game-winner came at 10:38 but Hargrove was not finished, he added his ninth of the season at 19:30 with an empty-net goal.
The Broncos also picked up power play goals from Nolan LaPorte and Taylor Fleming on the night and Lukas Hafner made 25 saves to earn the win.
Western Michigan capitalized on their first power play of the game to take a 1-0 lead at 9:27 in the first period. Hargrove found LaPorte to the left of the goal and the junior captain found the back of the net for the ninth time this season. The goal was also his nation-leading eighth on the power play. Hargrove registered his ninth assist of the season and Sheldon Dries also tallied a helper.
Alex Iafallo tied the game at 1-1 at 16:44 in the first period. Adam Krause sprung Iafallo on a rush and the talented sophomore tucked his back-hand shot under the cross bar for his fifth goal of the season.
WMU outshot UMD 15-9 in the first period but saw them get outshot 8-5 in the second period. Through two periods the Broncos were able to kill off all five Bulldog power plays and didn't draw another penalty the rest of the night.
Shots on goal were tied at 27 each.
Western Michigan continues its road swing through Minnesota next weekend with a pair of games at St. Cloud State.
