Broncos Earn Shootout Win Over No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. -- The Western Michigan hockey team earned two crucial points after a 2-2 tie and 2-1 shootout win at No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night.

Nolan LaPorte netted the shootout-winning goal in the third round after Frederick Tiffels also tallied to help seal the extra point. LaPorte and Colton Hargrove both also netted goals in regulation. Lukas Hafner made a game-high 24 saves and stopped two shots in the shootout.

The Broncos jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at 15:43 in the first period. After a five-minute major penalty was called on UMD, a WMU penalty forced a 4-on-4 period. LaPorte won a draw in the Bulldog zone back to Matt Stewart and the senior defenseman fired a shot from the left point. The puck deflected off of Hargrove and into the net for Hargrove's seventh goal of the season. Stewart's assist was his second of the season and LaPorte tallied his 10th.

Just under three minutes later at 18:24 Western Michigan took a 2-0 lead on LaPorte's eighth of the season. The Broncos had a 5-on-3 power play and Kenny Morrison found LaPorte to the left of the net. The junior captain was able to slot the puck between UMD goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo's legs and into the net. Justin Kovacs also tallied his team-leading 16th assist on the goal.

Minnesota-Duluth cut the lead to 2-1 on a power play goal by Brenden Kotyk at 5:01 in the second period. Kotyk hopped off the bench and fired a shot from the left point and past Hafner.

UMD tied the game up at 4:57 in the third period when a shot by Tony Cameranesi deflected off of Justin Crandall and past Hafner for his sixth goal of the season.

Neither team took advantage of the remaining 15:03 and the overtime period.

The Broncos finished the night 1-for-6 on the power play and the Bulldogs went 1-for-3. UMD outshot WMU 26-16 on the night, including holding Western Michigan to just three shots on goal in the second period.

The two teams square off again on Saturday at 8 p.m.
