KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Minnesota-Duluth's three unanswered third-period goals ended Western Michigan's six-game unbeaten streak Friday night in front of 3,551 fans at Lawson Ice Arena.
Minnesota-Duluth's Justin Crandall and Kyle Osterberg combined for eight points on the night. Crandall picked up four points, two of which came from third-period goals. Osterberg put in the second Bulldog third period goal off his own rebound from the edge of the crease at 15:27 in the third period from Cameranesi and Willie Corrin.
Crandall netted the game winner at 4:18 in the third period from Caleb Herbert and Corrin. During four-on-four play the Bulldog junior forward fired the puck in from the right faceoff dot and scored five-hole. His final goal was an empty-netter at 17:27 in the third period from Osterberg.
Osterberg put in the first goal of the game at 8:06 in the first period from Herbert and Crandall. Herbert got the puck just inside the left side of the slot and pushed it to Osterberg at the bottom of the right faceoff circle who chipped it in nearside. Osterberg's power play goal was his first of the night and eighth of the season.
Just over a minute after Osterberg's goal, Sheldon Dries blocked a pass and created a breakaway for himself, converting it to tie the game 1-1 at 9:09 in the first period.
After back and forth play Cameranesi scored the first even strength goal of the game at 19:10 in the second period from Osterberg and Crandall. Cameranesi shot the puck from the slot which went wide off the glass and ricocheted onto the top of the net. The puck rolled off to hit WMU goalie Lukas Hafner in the back and go in for his fourth of the season.
Western Michigan sophomore defenseman Kenney Morrison put in the Broncos second and final goal of the game at 19:38 in the second period. Morrison fired in a one-timer from the left point and scored his third goal of the season. Colton Hargrove notched his eighth assist of the year and Justin Kovacs tallied his 14th.
The Broncos will face off against the Bulldogs for the second game of the series tomorrow night in Lawson Ice Arena at 7:05 p.m.
