PITTSBURGH -- A late rally fell short as Western Michigan dropped a 2-1 decision to No. 17/14 Colgate to open the Three Rivers Classic at CONSOL Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pa., on late Monday afternoon.
Down 2-0 late in the third period Aidan Muir netted his second goal of the season after picking up a pass from Taylor Fleming to cut the lead to 2-1. The Broncos had a few chances in the final minutes including an empty-net backdoor chance but a pass to Michael Rebry was off the mark.
Lukas Hafner made 25 saves but was bested by Raider goalie Charlie Finn, who had a game-high 28 on the night.
The two teams battled through a scoreless first period with the Broncos holding a shot on goal advantage of 10-8. WMU was unable to capitalize on either of its power play opportunities in the opening stanza.
Senior captain Spiro Goulakos gave the Raiders a 1-0 lead late in the second period on his second goal of the season. The defenseman got the puck from Kyle Baun and fired a low shot from center point into the net. Baun notched his eighth assist of the season and Jake Kulevich tallied his sixth.
The game-winning goal came at 10:16 in the third period by Tim Harrison. Andrew Black fired a shot that hit the right post but the rebound bounced right to Harrison and he put it into an empty net to give the Raiders a 2-0 lead at the time.
The Broncos are back in action again on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. against the loser of the Robert Morris and Penn State game.
