KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Freshman forward Frederik Tiffels led Western Michigan to a 3-2 overtime-win against National Collegiate Hockey Conference opponent Colorado College at Lawson Ice Arena on Friday night.
The game-winning goal came at 1:58 in overtime play from Justin Kovacs and Sheldon Dries. Kovacs brought the puck out from the corner and got it to Tiffels in the slot who scored top shelf blocker side.
Tiffels not only tallied two of the Broncos (6-8-1, 2-6-1-1) three goals on the night but also extended his point streak to four games (6-1-7). Kovacs (four games, 0-9-9) and Aidan Muir (three games, 0-3-3) also extended their point streaks in tonight's win.
A late goal by Cody Bradley at 19:57 in the third period tied it 2-2 and pushed the game into overtime.
Both teams went scoreless through the first with Western Michigan tallying multiple scoring opportunities.
Colorado College got the scoring started at 3:31 in the second period. Jaccob Slavin got the puck up to Teemu Kivihalme at the left point who scored on WMU goaltender Lukas Hafner glove side.
Dries found the back of the net with an unassisted goal at 14:21 in the second period. The sophomore captain intercepted the puck in the defensive zone and skated it down to score on Colorado College goaltender Tyler Marble. The goal was Dries' eighth on the season.
WMU outshot CC 10-4 in the first period to lead final shots on goal 29-20. Hafner made 18 saves on the night.
