OXFORD, Ohio -- A rough stretch in the second period proved too much for the Western Michigan hockey team as the Broncos were swept by Miami after a 5-2 loss at Steve Cady Arena on Saturday night.
Will Kessel gave the Broncos a 1-0 lead at 3:41 into the second period after a scoreless first but the RedHawks rattled off four straight goals to take a 4-1 lead.
Anthony Louis, Blake Coleman, Sean Kuraly and Cody Murphy all scored within a span of 7:20 to close out the second period for Miami. Kuraly and Murphy's goals happened in a span of eight seconds.
Frederik Tiffels added his second goal of the season on the power play with 1:10 left in the 3rd period but the RedHawks were able to add an empty-net goal to seal the game.
The Broncos were outshot 32-25 on the night and had to kill off eight Miami power plays, including a five-minute major. Lukas Hafner made 11 of his 27 saves on the penalty kill.
Western Michigan heads to its first of two holiday tournaments of the season. WMU takes on former CCHA rivals Ohio State on Friday at 4 p.m. at Notre Dame's Shillelagh Tournament. The Broncos will play either Notre Dame or Union on Saturday with the time still to be determined.
