WMU vs Miami - Quotes 1-11

Head Coach Andy Murray

Performance in tonight's game

“We had a real gutsy performance by our team. Both teams played so very hard this weekend, someone had to win and we were fortunate we got the job done but a lot of determination. We need to be a little bit smarter. We took some unnecessary penalties and that is my responsibility and we will talk about that. Our penalty kill was outstanding obviously and we tested it way too much tonight and tested it way too much last night. We certainly need to play with a lot more discipline. This team, as fast as they are we needed to play hard and physical but that is the nature of our game and the way that we compete and battle. Frank Sublowski was obviously very good in net for us tonight and that was a key part of the hockey game as well. To get six points against a very good Miami team ranked 13th in the country coming in here it is a good weekend.”

Penalty kill all season—short handed goals

'It was a weekend for short handed goals, we had 3 on the weekend and we had a lot of determination.  I thought Chase Balisy and Nolan LaPorte had an outstanding weekend not only killing penalties as a pair but their 5-on-5 play was solid as well. It is interesting we have a lot of players in my opinion who can play a lot better than they played here this weekend and we need to notch it up because we are going in to play a top 3 team at St. Cloud next weekend, it is a challenge and every one of our remaining games this season will be tough. We have to be ready.”

Increase play 2nd half of season

“Every game stands as its own. I don't like coaches that say we have got momentum because what is momentum, is it something that you give to somebody? You have to go out and establish your credibility in every game and we have played solid hockey. We look at the Michigan State series and we played solid hockey, we played North Dakota real hard even though we lost both games 3-2 but I thought we played real hard. We went to Duluth and played real consistent hard all weekend, didn't get the saves from our goaltenders we needed but we played hard and went into the GLI and our game was good. Our game was good here this weekend and obviously here tonight we came out real strong and we got ourselves in penalty trouble, we have to be a lot more focused on reducing the number of penalties we take and our power play by the same token we have to do a better job on it.”

Junior Goaltender Frank Slubowski

Feelings on sweep this weekend

“It was exciting, everyone contributed out there, everyone did their job and it was great for our program. “

Penalty kill—team stood tall; how it feels as the goalie

“There were a lot of blocked shots out there and we didn't give them much time to set up in their zone. This goes back to our effort and a lot of pressure on them and that was a team effort all around.”

Facing Miami and their players

“It is fun. Like you said, they have a lot of skill and going against those guys is challenging and rewarding at the same time.”

Back on the ice—back in the rhythm

“It feels good, obviously we were playing but I give credit to Hafner too, he has been working his tail off and definitely deserves playing time too.”

Senior Forward Chase Balisy

Penalty kill this weekend

“I think we were just trying to pressure them up the ice as they were trying to do the same thing to us and almost had a short handed goal and we were just trying to throw it back at them and Nolan just made a great play on that goal I had.”

How big was the sweep this weekend?

“That is huge, any weekend you can get 6 points you are going to move up the standings pretty quickly and we moved up a couple spots this weekend for sure.”

10 penalties— the line between a physical intense game and too far..

“Yeah, 10 penalties is obviously too much but it is hard to get guys that don't penalty and it's hard for them to stay in the game. It takes a lot out of the penalty killers as well. We have to stay out of the box but we got the win, so no complaints.”

Having Frank back into the rhythm

“He won us the CCHA championship a couple years ago so he is definitely our goalie and he is playing great, if he keeps it up there is no stopping him.”

Sweep over Miami—ranked team and in conference

“It's huge for our program. We talked about going into this weekend and how we needed to start picking up points, it's the talent of the season and we want to make a good run but it's a huge weekend for us especially because they are a high ranked team.”

Big win, confidence wise?

“It is really big, Miami is a great team and any time you can get a lot of points in conference it's huge. So, to get a sweep against Miami was really big for us.”

Containing a player like Riley Barber

“He is a skilled guy, you have to give him credit. You can't overplay him, you have to give him some room but if you give guys like that too much room, it gives them space to create so you have to be tight on them and not give them too much room to do anything.”

Chance of goal

“It was 4-on-4 and there was a scrum on the side of the net so I started to sneak down and I was hoping the puck would pop out. I saw it squirt out into the slot so I took a slap shot.”

Do you think about it or just shoot?

“When it's a slap shot I am usually just firing away but when I am up close you kind of have to aim a little bit but if its from the points you can throw it towards the net.”
