Bronco Hockey Signs Seven to NLIs

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Western Michigan hockey program and head coach Andy Murray have announced the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent with Matt Iacopelli (Brownstown, Mich./Muskegon Lumberjacks, USHL), Willem Nong-Lambert (Urbandale, Iowa/Des Moines Buccaneers, USHL), Scott Moldenhauer (Oak Ridge, N.C./Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, USHL), Aidan Muir (Ann Arbor, Mich./Indiana Ice, USHL), Luke Shiplo (Oakville, Ontario/Lincoln Stars, USHL), Paul Stoykewych (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Penticton Vees, BCHL) and Frederik Tiffels (Cologne, Germany/Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, USHL) have all committed their futures to the Broncos.

The group features three defensemen in Moldenhauer, Shiplo and Stoykewych and five forwards in Iacopelli, Nong-Lambert, Muir and Tiffels. Six of the seven come from the United States Hockey League, the Tier I junior hockey league in the United States.

Matt Iacopelli - Muskegon Lumberjacks, USHL - Forward - Left Shot - 6'2, 192 lbs
Iacopelli is in his first season in the USHL with the Lumberjacks. Through 31 games he ranks fifth in the USHL in scoring with 23 goals and 12 assists for 35 points. His 23 tallies currently puts him second in the league in goal scoring. Iacopelli also played his midget hockey for the famed Belle Tire program.

Coach Murray on Iacopelli - “Matt is a shooter and a strong skater. He's show then ability early in his USHL career to finish and has a very good left-handed shot.”

Willem Nong-Lambert - Des Moines Buccaneers, USHL - Forward - Left Shot - 6'2, 195 lbs
Nong-Lambert is in his second season in the USHL with the Des Moines Buccaneers. The big forward has racked up 20 goals and 18 assists in 60 career games and had 32 points in his first season in the league last year, placing him fourth on the team in points and the team's top goal-scorer.

Coach Murray on Nong-Lambert - “Willem is a solid player with good sizes. He can skate very well for a big guy and we think he could be used in a lot of different roles for our team.”

Scott Moldenhauer - Cedar Rapids RoughRiders, USHL - Defenseman - Right Shot - 6'4, 215 lbs
Moldenhauer is a big defenseman in his second season in the USHL with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. So far through two seasons he has appeared in 80 games and tallied 15 points. Last season he played in 62 games with three goals and 10 assists, also racking up 108 penalty minutes.

Coach Murray on Moldenhauer - “Scot is a big, physical defenseman. He is a solid defenseman that is tough to play against and is going to be a solid player at Western Michigan.”

Aidan Muir - Indiana Ice, USHL - Forward - Right Shot - 6'3, 195 lbs
Muir was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round (113th overall) of 2013 NHL Draft over the summer. In his first season in the USHL he has played in 27 games, totalling eight goals and 11 assists for 19 points. He has helped the Ice to a record of 17-6-5 at the top of the Eastern Conference so far.  Prior to Indiana he played for the Victory Honda midget program and tallied 40 points in 37 games last season.

Coach Murray on Muir - “Aidan is a power forward that skates very well. He's got great athletic ability and we know the Edmonton Oilers already think very highly of him.

Luke Shiplo - Lincoln Stars, USHL - Defenseman - Left Shot - 5'9, 179 lbs
Shiplo is in his second season in the USHL. Last season he appeared in 46 games and tallied 10 points for Des Moines but began his current season in Lincoln. So far this year he has appeared in 26 games and tallied three assists. Shiplo also played in the Ontario Junior Hockey League before making the jump to the USHL, appearing in 49 games with the Georgetown Raiders and Toronto Lakeshore Patriots. In his season in the OJHL he racked up 21 points on five goals and 16 assists.

Coach Murray on Shiplo - “Luke is a very good skating and mobile defenseman that has great puck moving ability. He's show the ability to jump into play and help offensively.”

Paul Stoykewych - Penticton Vees, BCHL - Defenseman - Left Shot - 6'2, 200 lbs
Stoykewych is in his first season in the BCHL with the Vees after playing two seasons in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League for the Winnipeg Blues. Through 34 games with the Vees this season he has netted four goals and 14 assists. His 18 points ranks him second on the team in scoring amongst defenseman. In his two season in the MJHL he totalled 52 points on 10 goals and 42 assists in 109 career games. His older brother Peter is currently in his third season at Colorado College and his other older brother Adam plays for Western Ontario.

Coach Murray on Stoykewych - “Paul is a strong skating defenseman with a good stick. He plays a physical game when needed and is a strong puck mover.”

Frederik Tiffels - Cedar Rapids RoughRiders - Forward - Left Shot - 6'0, 192 lbs
Tiffels currently plays for Cedar Rapids but started the season with Muskegon before being traded to Fargo and was just recently traded to the RoughRiders. He has yet to play a game in Cedar Rapids because he was in Sweden with the German U20 team competing at the World Junior Hockey Championships. It was Tiffels second straight year playing in the WJC with Germany and finished the tournament second on the team in scoring with five points on three goals and two assists. He had two goals and an assists in Germany's 3-0 win over the Czech Republic. So far he has appeared in 75 games in the USHL, scoring seven goals and tallying 28 assists. In his first full season at Muskegon he tallied 22 assists in 50 games.

Coach Murray on Tiffels - “Frederik brings great speed and has a lot of experience at the international level from the World Junior Championships. He also has some great passing ability.”
