Men?s Soccer Drops 4-2 Decision at UIC

CHICAGO- The Western Michigan men's soccer team suffered a 4-2 setback at Horizon League opponent UIC Sunday. Senior Oliver Mayer netted both goals for WMU, scoring one in each half.

“It was another disappointing result, although we continue to show signs of moving forward as a program we have yet to play a complete game,” said Bronco head coach Chad Wiseman. “Our decisions on and off the ball were very poor today. We have no choice but to continue to train hard and prepare for our next opponent.”

Western Michigan and UIC were tied 1-1 at the half. Slobodan Aleksov had an unassisted strike for UIC in the 15th minute and Mayer knotted the score in the 22nd minute, finishing from the six on a ball by Marco Lobo.

The Flames opened the second half with a goal by Jesus Torres in the 52nd minute. Torres received a pass from the left by Jorge Alvarez and punched it in from five yards out. Torres and Alvarez hooked up again in the 63rd minute, as UIC extended its lead to 3-1. This time it was Alvarez with the goal, heading in a cross from Torres.

Western Michigan was awarded a penalty kick after UIC goalkeeper Andrew Putna was issued a yellow card in the 82nd minute. Mayer made good on the shot, pulling the Broncos within one, 3-2.

Aleksov responded for UIC a little less than two minutes later, dribbling into the box and firing for his second goal of the game.

Mayer took three of Western Michigan's four shots of the day. UIC (1-2-0) totaled 15 shots all together, Aleksov taking six.

Sophomore goalkeeper Chase Rau made a season-high six saves for Western Michigan. He was replaced in the 84th minute by junior Adriano Deabreu. Deabreu made one save.

Western Michigan (0-4-0) heads to Eastern Illinois for two matches this upcoming weekend, facing Northern Kentucky and EIU. The Broncos return to Kalamazoo for their first home game Friday, Sept. 20, against Canisius.
