#Waldo75 Day 2: Mr. 200 Lovell Coleman

The performance in terms of rushing yards in Waldo Stadium history goes all the way back to 1958 when Lovell Coleman ran for 282 yards on 21 carries against the rival from the north, the Central Michigan Chippewas.

The first team All-Mid-American Conference running back was the nucleus behind the WMU offense for the 1958 season and Coleman would waste no time showing why he was the best player on the field as he took control against Central Michigan in the first game of the season. Coleman rushed for 282 yards on just 21 carries, which is still a single-game record for rushing yards and is tied for fifth most all-purpose yards in a single-game in school history.

Coleman was also able to score three touchdowns for the Broncos in the opening game of the season. However, 282 yards and three touchdowns wasn't enough for the Broncos to defeat the Chippewas.  Coleman was unable to grind out two more yards in the final seconds to earn the conversion. The Chippewas defeated the Broncos, 33-32.

Coleman became the first Bronco running back to rush for 1,000 yards in a season, amassing 1,076 yards in 1958.  He ended his career as a two-time All-MAC selection and earned All-America status in 1959 (Williamson).  He was drafted in the 17th round (199th overall) of the 1960 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns.  He was eventually named to the All-Century Team in 2005.
